Seminars focus on water security, climate change The UNU Interactive Seminar on Global Issues (ISGI) devoted its March and April sessions to the critical environmental issues of international water security and climate change in Asia. Speaking to an audience of academics, policy makers and citizens at the United Nations University in March, Prof. Mikiyasu Nakayama, of the University of Tokyo, introduced the multifaceted and dynamic nature of the interplay between domestic and international water security, citing ongoing and emerging international water disputes in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. At the next seminar in April, Prof. Yasuko Kameyama, of Japan's National Institute for Environmental Studies, explored the intense and growing international debate over the future climate change regime, highlighting the high stakes for Asian countries given their large populations, growing greenhouse gas emissions, burgeoning economies and vulnerability to the impact of climate change. Designed as a timely and informative seminar series on global issues, ISGI sessions feature contributors to recent publications from UNU Press. The programme is conducted entirely in Japanese to encourage and promote discussion among the predominantly Japan-based audience. All ISGI sessions are webcast and can be watched after the event. The ISGI website has more information about the seminar series including its past and future sessions. |
