Negotiating peace: Martti Ahtisaari to deliver U Thant Lecture

The former President of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari (right), will reflect upon his numerous important contributions to international peace and security when he delivers the 14th U Thant Distinguished Lecture on Negotiating Peace in Africa, Asia and Europe at UNU Centre, Tokyo, on May 26.

From facilitating the peace process between the government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement to his recent role as UN Special Envoy for the Kosovo Status Process, Mr. Ahtisaari has successfully brought together opposing parties in conflicts around the globe, facilitating dialogue and setting the scene for agreement to emerge. His efforts have allowed seemingly intractable conflicts to end in political, negotiated settlements.

The U Thant Distinguished Lecture Series is a forum through which eminent thinkers and world leaders speak on the role of the United Nations in addressing the challenges facing the world's peoples and nations in the 21st Century. The lecture series is co-organized by the UNU Centre, the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and the Science Council of Japan (SCJ).

It is a UNU tradition to invite world leaders and renowned individuals to Tokyo to explore the role of the United Nations in a rapidly changing world. The U Thant Distinguished Lecture Series builds upon this tradition by providing an opportunity for up to four prominent individuals each year to visit the university and share their insights and experiences with scholars, policy makers, business leaders and the general public.
